Centipede Lawn: What weed control would be better?Updated a month ago

For centipede grass, both Celsius WG and Atrazine can be effective, but they serve slightly different purposes and have different safety profiles:

Celsius WG

  • Pros:
    • Safe for centipede grass, even in warm temperatures.
    • Controls a broad spectrum of broadleaf weeds and some grassy weeds (e.g., dollarweed, clover, spurge, and Virginia buttonweed).
    • Excellent for use during the growing season when temperatures are higher.
  • Cons:
    • More expensive than Atrazine.
    • Doesn’t control as many grassy weeds like crabgrass as well as some other products.

Atrazine

  • Pros:
    • Controls a broad range of broadleaf and some grassy weeds.
    • Acts as both a pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicide.
    • Effective for winter weed control, especially when applied in late fall or early spring.
    • Generally less expensive.
  • Cons:
    • Can stress centipede grass if applied during high temperatures (above 85°F).
    • Restricted in some areas due to environmental concerns (check your local regulations).

Recommendation:

  • For Summer Weed Control: Celsius WG is the better option because it’s safe in the heat and effective against a broad range of weeds without stressing the centipede grass.

  • For Fall/Winter or Early Spring Applications: Atrazine is great for controlling winter weeds and preventing new weeds from emerging before the growing season.

If you're dealing with persistent broadleaf weeds during the growing season, Celsius WG is likely your best bet. For seasonal weed prevention, especially when temperatures are cooler, Atrazine works well.
